Tucked away in the souterrain of the ‘Fürst Metternich’ hotel in Vienna, Barfly’s is one of those places that immediately embraces you and seduces you into a microcosm of a classic American Bar. A brain-child of Mario Castillo, a legendary entrepreneur from the Dominican Republic, Barfly’s resembles a time-capsule taken of a 1940s-50s style Bogart movie set.
Austria’s loose smoking laws contribute to an environment where a selection of over 500 cocktails and even greater number of Whiskys gets matched by a great selection of Dominican/Cuban Puros. The walls are covered in whisky bottles, some in cabinets, some behind the bar and the selection can be summarised as ‘eclectic’. Vienna is somewhat off the beaten track when compared to the Whisky Hype seen elsewhere. This means that a number of rare Scotches, Japanese Single Malts and Bourbons feature prominently on the drinks list – many at very reasonable prices. Recently Barfly's has started a program where they sell some of there selected bottles to the public. You can then decide to take it home, or have them keep it in their cabinet waiting for you to come in and enjoy it over time.
The atmosphere is intimate and one easily gets to know other aficionados in the room and conversations may even drift away from admiring the quality drams that are on offer. Barfly's is a typical Den where one can wind down, get lost in great conversations (always a treat in Vienna), and enjoy some of the best drams anywhere in the city.
