JAPAN - since 1930/2007
Whoever has bought alcohol in Tokyo's Shinjuku would know about one of Japan's most renowned liquor resellers Shinanoya. Established in 1930 they have set up a network of smaller and larger shops across Japan and they typically carry some of the best selection of drams in the country.
Next to operating as a liquor reseller, and given their well-established contacts to distilleries, bars and brokers, Shinanoya started bottling whiskies under a number of labels (such as 'The Chess', 'Salon de Shimaji, 'Instrumental Solo Selection' and others) in 2007. Their portfolio mostly includes Scottish Single Malts (leaning towards Islay) as well as some rare Japanese Hanyu and Karuizawa. For their 10th Anniversary bottle, they chose a 29yo Mars Komagatake in 2017.
Chasing Shinanoya releases can at times be confusing as they often also release joint bottlings with other independents or bars.
